Late night shopping initative boosts trade

A scheme to open Newcastle’s shops after 5pm has boosted the economy by £53.1 million, according to new figures.
 
NE1, the city centre business improvement company, released the figures as part of a six monthly review.

Former Northern Way boss takes over at Science City

John Rundle, the former director of regeneration initiative The Northern Way, has been appointed as interim director of the company running the Newcastle Science City project.
 
Rundle will start his new role at Newcastle Science Company following the departure of former chief executive Peter Arnold last month.

Gateshead submits bid for city status

Gateshead has formally submitted its bid for official city status to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubliee next year.
 
Gateshead Council hopes cultural and commercial attractions such as the Angel of the North, the Sage Gateshead, the Baltic and Metro Centre will boost its case.

Operator selected for Newcastle's Toffee Factory

Newcastle's Toffee Factory regeneration scheme

Newcastle and Gateshead’s regeneration company 1NG has announced the appointment of an operator for Newcastle’s Toffee Factory development in Ouseburn.
 
The office scheme in the former Maynards building will be operated by facilities management company Creative Space management.
 
It will provide approximately 1,500m sq of workspace in 25 new units of semi-managed office space.

Hewlett Packard opens Gateshead call centre

A new call centre which has created 170 new jobs in Gateshead opened for business this week.
 
The Hewlett Packard centre at The Watermark business park, is being run by Teleperformance, the world’s largest call centre outsourcing firm.

Newcastle University Business School has moved into a brand new building at Downing Plaza.
 
Property firm Downing has completed work on scheme which will provide office and teaching space for the school.

Newcastle Science City gets planning approval

Newcastle City Council has granted outline planning permission for the 1.8 million sq ft Newcastle Science Central park.
 
The scheme will be built on the 9.7ha former Scottish & Newcastle brewery site in the city centre, with construction expected to begin in early 2012.

Law firm expands Newcastle operations

Patent and trademark law firm Murgitroyd & Company has moved into a new office to accommodate an increase in staff numbers.
 
The firm has expanded its staff in the city to eight, and says it is anticipating a further two additions in the next two months.

Gateshead forms homes regeneration partnership

A joint venture between Gateshead City Council, housing association Home Group and developer Galliford Try is to deliver 2,400 homes on 19 sites.
 
The sites will be developed by the Evolution Gateshead consortium, across 70ha of land in the city.
