Develop Croydon

The annual Develop Croydon conference launched in 2010 to provide investors and advisors with a forum to learn about existing developments and new investment opportunities, and to exchange information about one of London's biggest regeneration programmes.

Develop Croydon grew out of the twice-yearly City3 magazine, published in partnership with Croydon Council between 2007 and 2010.

The conference helped establish the Develop Croydon Forum of developers, advisors and the council. It meets regularly to share information about development projects, plans and policies, oversees a website and monthly news e-campaign, and organises investor tours and other marketing initiatives.

Testimonials

"Croydon is London's best kept secret in terms of an ideal location to do business .The public transport infrastructure is second to none with rail, tube, tram and buses all feeding into a central core area. This seminar should help to address the perception issues which stop Croydon from taking its rightful place in the target lists of big players looking to relocate."

James Routledge
Senior director
CBRE Investors

"We want this conference to spread the message to the wider community that Croydon is a great place to invest whether to a base business, live or work. It's a mere 15 minutes from the West End and the City with Gatwick airport about the same by train. Network Rail and the Council are bringing forward some £20m of improvements to East Croydon station while Stanhope and Schroders are bringing forward new plans for Ruskin Square, CCURV are building a new HQ for the Council and Berkeley Homes are progressing Saffron Square. John Lewis recently opened a new Home Store on the Purley Way and Fairfields Hall is to be refurbished."

Charles Walford
Property director
Stanhope PLC

"Part of people's negative image of Croydon is the general lack of knowledge about the positives that it offers businesses and residential development. In many cases Croydon is not even considered as a possible destination when compared with White City / Stratford / Birmingham and yet in many areas Croydon does offer businesses with a better working environment i.e. rentals, access to central London, access to good quality, residential in the surrounding area etc. There is also a general uncertainty about where the Council and even the GLA / Mayor sit with regards development potential. Part of the purpose of the OAPF, and indeed this development seminar, is to demonstrate to the private sector that things have changed."

Michael Mulhern
Senior strategic planner / urban designer
Greater London Authority

"This conference is a reminder that Croydon is a great place for business and a fantastic inward investment opportunity. A resilient and enterprising place where everyone is working together to support business and ensure that Croydon is ideally positioned to ride the next economic wave."

Jon Rouse

"Croydon is Boris Johnson's next priority — the GLA, the council and TFL are keen to create a planning framework for Central Croydon by this time next year which can be delivered. We need to decide 'what sort of new Croydon do we want?'. But it's not about just creating a vision, it's about actually becoming that new city and ensuring we make it happen."

Tony Pierce
OAPF project director
Croydon Council

"The transport aspects of Croydon's exciting growth agenda are a vital component in ensuring successful delivery for all concerned. TfL are pleased to support Develop Croydon as a valuable Forum for discussion of these issues with key players."

"The Develop Croydon event was very well organised and had excellent representation from key players in Croydon. Well done - we look forward to keeping the momentum going, seeing some real action on the future Croydon and hopefully more positive press coverage!"

Jill Robertson
Business development manager

"The event gave Croydon's development and business community a real lift. A view expressed to me by several delegates was: is this just another big conversation piece, followed by both silence and non activity? My view is that this event was different. Speakers such as Jon Rouse gave an honest presentation and clearly as an authority we cannot deliver the regeneration programme on our own and we desperately need others to make Croydon their place of choice for investment. I with my colleagues will do all we can to assist both the authority and any inward investors to achieve for Croydon, its residents, communities, and our futures. On another note the pre-conference communication was first class by being both informative and clear. On the day itself, the conference team ensured that all delegates were supported and nothing was too much for them. A very positive experience."

Cllr Toni Letts OBE
Shadow Cabinet Member for Economic Regeneration
London Borough of Croydon

"A big well done and thank you for a very professional and really worthwhile event. It all seemed to go very smoothly and there was certainly lots of interesting debate and talk throughout the day."

"I appreciated the excellent programme and support the aim of attracting business to Croydon. I attended as a Labour councillor and I made some useful contacts and enjoyed some good conversations. I do not want to comment on individual speakers. However, be assured that the previous Labour administration and the current Labour opposition is committed to working with and supporting business in Croydon. We recognise the importance of the business opportunities in Croydon and also the availability of good residential neighbourhoods for staff and leisure and cultural facilities."

Cllr Maggie Mansell
Labour member for Norbury Ward
