Networkers learnt about the issues around delivering housing, and the rise of electric cars and modular homes at workshops held at Sitematch London.
The event held on 6 February included a session called The Art of Delivery led by Inner Circle Consulting that focused on issues both the public and private sectors faced when trying to get developments to the next stage.
Delegates were divided up into two groups to discuss, and within their groups the fishbowl technique was used. This is where a smaller group of people discuss issues, while other participants sit and observe listening to the comments being made.
Talking about the agenda for the session Jamie Ounan, director at Inner Circle Consulting, said: “We are trying to really get under the skin of what each other does, what is the journey that you go on in your delivery, and ultimately what is the art of delivery that you have that will get stuff done.
“We are going to work through these knotty problems of getting planning permission, of running a good procurement, of ultimately transforming a place to a standard we can all be proud of.”
The workshop covered areas including procurement, planning, supply chain, working with utility companies and public consultations, discussing how each stage presents challenges for both the public and private sectors.
Participants suggested solutions including “building relationships” during delivery, and added that “trust is one of the key ingredients” to progress developments.
Ounan said: “When we look back in ten years’ time it’s not just about getting stuff over the line, it’s not just that we fulfilled our job descriptions. It’s that we are leaving these places that are absolutely fantastic.”
The second session of the day at Sitematch London 2020 was led by Jonathan Riggall, director of energy and environment at Stantec, where he talked about electric vehicles, power poverty, pollution and drones and how each of these issues affect current and future developments.
Discussed in the session, called Industrial Strategy – The Electric Revolution, was what could realistically happen in the near future that may impact housebuilding.
Among the advancements expected to occur by 2025 is 90% of the population are due to have regular access to the internet, the first 3D-printed car will be in production, there will be the first transplant of a 3D-printed liver and the first AI machine is expected to be on a corporate board of directors.
The third session of the day was called Friary Park case study: a collaboration between a council, developer and housing association. A panel discussed how the development in Acton, in the borough of Ealing, will be created through a partnership between housing association Catalyst Housing and specialist mixed-use developer Mount Anvil.
The scheme received planning permission in November last year, and will provide 990 new homes at the site close to Acton train station where Crossrail will open in 2021.
The panel that discussed how the development is progressing, including details about the design and quality of the homes, included Marcus Bate, investment director at Mount Anvil, Steve Skuse, director of land and partnerships - London, from Catalyst Housing and Lucy Taylor, director of regeneration and planning, from Ealing Council.
The last session of the day talked about the next steps in the property industry for the modular delivery of homes. It was chaired by Mike De’Ath, partner at HTA, and the panel that discussed the subject included Rory Bergin, partner at HTA; Craig Liddell, partnerships director at Ilke Homes; Pat Hayes, managing director at Be First and Donna Macfadyen, project manager at Cast.
Topics discussed included how the public sector can embrace modern methods of construction (MMC) and how to monitor quality.
